Little Hiker

You might think that all we do is hike. In fact, we do quite a lot of it - it is free, it is great exercise, and the area is second to none. We love it!

Today we were up above Grindelwald - a lovely spring day, with still some snow around at higher levels, but warm sunshine and flowers everywhere. Jaclyn has great hiking legs - 4 to 5 hours are OK at one time.

All through the area are cold wells to supply us with our drinking water along the way. Here Jackie has just tanked up in front of that ancient barn. There are plenty of fellow hikers - you can't hike in Europe and hope to find remote places you have all to yourself, as we would be used to in Manitoba or the Rockies. But it is beautiful almost beyond description, and that makes up for it!

Spring

May 1st, and look how green it is! This photo is taken from the top of Sausenburg, which is a castle tower rising up from the forest at the top of a hill. In the background is the Blauen, the highest hill in the area, and from which, on clear days, you can see the Alps stretched out all across the southern horizon. They are about 80 km from here. We've walked up the Blauen a few times - takes about 3 hours and rises 800 meters from Kandern.

Spring is beautiful here, and long - lasts about three months, with lots of greenery, apple blossoms, and even lambs feeding with their new Moms (or is it the other way around?) on the hillsides. While lambs are cute, sheep aren't - they look stupid, even have silly looking faces. God compares us to sheep throughout the Bible, and yet He still loves us. I'm reminded of that each time I see sheep.
