It reminds me that life consists of many paths, some of our own choosing; many not. Our desire is to make the right choices when the choice is ours to make, and to respond rightly to situations not of our choosing that confront us. We are dependant on God both to choose well, and to respond in an honourable way.

The Way we Were

For 20 years we worked in Niverville (Manitoba). God gave us a beautiful family, allowed us to acquire all the good things most people could want, and we more or less did what we liked. We had many friends and good relationships. Though Niverville is arguably the most boring and ugly town in Canada, those were nevertheless wonderful years! Yet, with time, it seemed something was not quite right. Was there something else that God had used these years in business, and our former teaching years, to prepare us for? It seemed so.

We sensed that God was directing us to move into something new, perhaps something less secure, something He would take charge of. Eventually, in 2000, we left Canada for Prague, where we worked with Riverside School for two years. Then, in '02, it was on to Kandern in Germany for a position with the Black Forest Academy.

Kandern is a few minutes north of Basel, Switzerland. This is pretty country indeed, and the town in the picture above is where Bernice worked, at the elementary school. Kandern is 3 km to the left, just off the picture.

All good things come to an end to make way for other things, and in Aug 06 we moved back to Canada, this time Winnipeg.

Too Sick to Pray

In 2003, I photographed this old man in prayer in a Prague cathedral. How exciting it must have been to be caught up in the "Hosannas" that day, especially listening to the children as they caught the excitement of their parents, and enjoyed the special experience of a donkey-riding King! And to think that the Creator rode a donkey - only to be turned against just 7 days later.

I have been listening to a new dramatization of the NKJV of the Bible, following the text as it is read. Because BFA has so many residential students, it is really important to provide them with weekend activities which they enjoy, and sports is certainly a big part of life at our school. Mauritius is an island nation off the coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, and is truly a tropical paradise. How excited we all were as we boarded the 12 hour flight from Frankfurt and headed south!

Mauritius is completely surrounded by white sand beaches inside a coral reef, and between the reef and the beaches is the warmest, most beautifully colored water we had ever seen. Even the sky looks different in the southern hemisphere at night -- gone are the familiar characters, replaced by stars we had never seen. It was a wonderful experience all around.

One morning as we stepped out onto our deck, we were greeted with this 180° rainbow in a perfectly clear blue sky arching over the Indian Ocean. The rainbow reminded me of God's many promises, promises which we find especially important given the uncertainty of our lives at this point in time. When she arrived in Montreal via Air Canada on a ticket purchased from Expedia to board her leg to London via British Airways, she was in for an unpleasant surprise...they refused to board her claiming she was late for the flight. (She was not late - Air Canada had delivered her on time.) So that meant a 24 hour wait in Montreal overnight, and a $250 penalty which she had to pay on the spot.

Well - she did get here, and now we are in a celebratory mood as we look forward to the month of December! I hope you visit us someday - we'll be pleased to treat you to some of these!

Kandern is a quaint town, 1230 years old - that's right, founded in 776 AD! Thus it has narrow, crooked streets, lined with buildings dating back hundreds of years. It's at the confluence of two small mountain streams, and at one time had a few mills to show for the water power.

Kandern has three fine grocery stores, the usual banks and offices, and a hardware store, Schneider's, that brings one back to the days when a store had everything in one little place - be it in bins and boxes or whatever. We actually rarely need to leave Kandern. And that suits us just fine.

Many of our Christmas traditions, including the Yule tree, originated here in Germany. It is a wonderful place to be during the Christmas season. It helps that it's not minus 30 degrees Celsius too!

Ocean

The sun shone beautifully today, and in late afternoon we headed up into the hills around Kandern. Good friends, Ted & Betty Dick, were with us. Not more than 7 kilometers out, a bank of fog rolled in from France, completely obscuring the landscapes we had hoped to see. Blauen ("The Blue One"), looming some 800 meters above our valley, provides the best views. Might we rise high enough to penetrate the fog?

The view from below had been one of gloom and greyness. But from on top, it was as though we had emerged from a misty ocean, an ocean which pushed into the bays formed by the hills as they descended toward the Rhein River to the West. There was no trace of the many towns and roads below us - a normally busy scene had been transformed into one of complete tranquility.

The transformation we witnessed reminds me of God's work in our lives. What appears to us as fog and disappointment, He changes to a thing of beauty, peace and joy. I think He will do this with my ALS as well.

Hiking

It has been conjectured that when the Lord takes us to heaven, it will be via Switzerland. This picture was taken today at around noon, looking out over the mighty Central Alps from Műrren, a town on a ledge suspended high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. This is typical Swiss country, and we so enjoy a sunny day spent in the Alps. A farmer down the valley was burning some wood this morning, and the smoke stratified and hung in a thin layer over the valley floor.

On this day we were with my cousin, Paul Loewen, and his wife Mary. We hiked for about 5 hours with these scenes all around us. We had to remind ourselves constantly that this was Real - not just a wonderful Dream. Later Paul and Mary took us to a wonderful restaurant, right on the shore of the Thuner See - a lovely mountain lake. We watched the Alps turn pink, and then purple as the sun set behind us.

In my condition, heaven looms large. Here's what I anticipate: With the creativity of God so evident in our fallen world, I'm anticipating even much better - lots of diversity in stunning geography with seas and rivers and mountains and all, amazing new kinds of plant and animal life, a spectacular accessible "deep space" cosmos around it all - I really anticipate a lot more than golden streets and cities. I imagine the colours and sounds, sights and smells and tastes to be many orders of magnitude beyond what we already have. I hope there will be lots to discover and learn about - not just that we know everything about the new created order from the outset.

Yes - even if heaven is "only" as lovely as Switzerland, I will be quite happy to live there forever ... with the Son of God who has made it possible for me.

Rome Trip

The Senior Class of the school is very special - they are only months away from being torn apart, many never to see each other again, because they come from so many different places, to whence they will return. So in October, this class of 75 kids takes one week off school to travel to Florence, Venice, and Rome. Rome is a long day's drive from where we are, the other cities a little closer. Staff who have been class sponsors for the past four years as the class has moved from Freshman to Senior status accompany them. It really sets the tone for the remainder of the year, serving as a bonding time, not to mention the many things they learn in places of such historic significance.

This is Chris and his friend Charity, in front of the class's lodgings right by the Mediterranean Sea.

School Begins Again

Each Wednesday, I meet with the Administrative Committee of the school and this is where the issues confronting the school are discussed. We often fill our Sigg bottles with this water, and it is always cold and good!

Life is a little like water. It flows and flows ... until it is exhausted. It can be beautiful and clear, providing refreshment to those it comes into contact with. I've become more aware of how precious is life, since being told I have ALS. A disease for which there is no cure, nor known cause, it is always terminal, and usually runs its course within 4 years or so. As of today, I've had ALS symptoms for one year.

Flowing clear and clean water also reminds me of the Living Water that Jesus offered the woman at the well in John 4. Jesus used a picture of the most important and beautiful life-sustaining substance there is ... to show that there is something even much more important, and that while it is freely given, only He can provide it to us!

I pray that Jesus' Living Water will be accepted by many, so that we will share it together, without end, when life's water, good as it can be, is exhausted for each of us, as it inevitably must be.

Pool Days

Summer in Kandern usually means lots of time at the pool. We're lucky in that there is a great park there, season tickets are cheap, and the pool is beautiful and, typical of all things German, very clean.

Jackie has learned to go off the high board, though not diving yet from that height, and loves this long water slide - here she's just at the top ready to go!! Given that there's little else to do in this small town in summer (OK, lots of hiking and biking opportunities, and a nice ice cream shop, but that's about it), Jackie is almost never alone at the pool - all her friends are there too. So it's a great place to cool down on a hot day.

But I have to admit it's not West Hawk Lake, or Grand Beach. So I planned a surprise dinner for Bernice and 8 of our best friends here in Kandern. It was a super evening at the Mattenműhle restaurant in Oberegginen. It's been a great 26 years - only regret might be that we didn't get married younger. But then, Bernice was only 21 that day.

Hard to believe that we were married right here in Kandern - who'd have thought we'd again be living here all these years later! We visited the church this week too - a little red sandstone chapel on a hillside, with a tall spire pointing to God above. It has been a wonderful 26, and we hope for many more!

During the dinner, a waitress accidentally spilled about half a litre of Coke onto our friend. She was very apologetic, but at the end of the evening I accidentally tipped her about $30, due to my misuse of a German phrase! Not to be outdone though, one of his friends, though from sunny California, also took the plunge. She doesn't actually have any memories of Canada at all - but then, she was only 4 the last time she was there.

Pastry Café

The town of Staufen has a large castle on a hill, with vineyards all the way to the top. Over the course of their stay, we hiked over 100 km, much of it in the Swiss Alps. They leave tomorrow. Some of them even have some pretty nice views .

We have often been treated to the sound of cowbells as we climb the slopes, and one wonders how the cows are cared for so high in the mountains. In fact, the farmers come up to milk them, and make the cheese right on site. Sometimes one sees the old-fashioned metal milk cans cooling in the rushing streams up there.

The mountains here are so tamed that you'd never see a cougar or a bear as you might in the Rockies - here you'd be lucky to see a marmot! Much of the farmers' incomes comes in the form of government subsidies, and they say those days may soon be over, due to the shrinking population of Europe. Then farmlands will be abandoned, the land likely becoming wild again. Already, wolves have returned to parts or Eastern Europe where the population of humans has slowly died out.

Adelboden

What a Day! Summer's here, and Switzerland is Beautiful. Today Bernice and Jackie and I rode the gondola up to the top of Tschentenalp, and then hiked back the 4 hours to our chalet in the valley below. It was wonderful - nothing like hiking with people you love in a place that's beautiful. Jackie and I even found a waist-deep mountain stream on the way down for a chilling dip!
The mountain flowers are best in late June, and the mountainsides were covered with them today. It is amazing how many different kinds there are at these high altitudes, where the season is short and quite harsh. I caught these insects enjoying the fragrance as well - what a lovely afternoon we had!

We've been here for a few days, renting a chalet with my folks down in the valley at Adelboden. This is a very rural Swiss farm village, and there are cows everywhere, all through the valley and high up in the mountain pastures. Last night we heard cow bells into the night, as farmers were busy queuing up their cattle for the move up into higher pastures for the summer.

The weather has been perfect, and although my folks are 75 and 80 years old, they've kept right up with us as we hike mile after mile at the highest altitudes we can find. This is a wonderful time and place. It has been six months since I found out for sure that I have ALS. Wonder what next summer will bring? We can do nothing but trust God in this situation. There is nowhere else to turn.

Little Hiker

You might think that all we do is hike. In fact, we do quite a lot of it - it is free, it is great exercise, and the area is second to none. We love it!

Today we were up above Grindelwald - a lovely spring day, with still some snow around at higher levels, but warm sunshine and flowers everywhere. Jaclyn has great hiking legs - 4 to 5 hours are OK at one time.

All through the area are cold wells to supply us with our drinking water along the way. Here Jackie has just tanked up in front of that ancient barn. There are plenty of fellow hikers - you can't hike in Europe and hope to find remote places you have all to yourself, as we would be used to in Manitoba or the Rockies. But it is beautiful almost beyond description, and that makes up for it!

Spring

May 1st, and look how green it is! This photo is taken from the top of Sausenburg, which is a castle tower rising up from the forest at the top of a hill. In the background is the Blauen, the highest hill in the area, and from which, on clear days, you can see the Alps stretched out all across the southern horizon. They are about 80 km from here. We've walked up the Blauen a few times - takes about 3 hours and rises 800 meters from Kandern.

Spring is beautiful here, and long - lasts about three months, with lots of greenery, apple blossoms, and even lambs feeding with their new Moms (or is it the other way around?) on the hillsides. While lambs are cute, sheep aren't - they look stupid, even have silly looking faces. God compares us to sheep throughout the Bible, and yet He still loves us. I'm reminded of that each time I see sheep.

Toronto

This week, my brothers and sister and I surprised Dad, appearing in Toronto where he had sort of been lured to, to celebrate his 80th birthday. We rented a summer camp and had a big house to ourselves. We made all our own food, and this is Don, my brother, one of the chefs! We had a great time as a family, not having been together since 2000. Mom and Dad are both healthier than I - definitely still part of the "young old". We even had some time to tour old haunts, since they lived in Kitchener when they were first married, and I was born there. (The camp was near Kitchener.)

It was also so good to see Jayne, as she had just finished up her first year of university and was about to move off to Manitoba. I helped her box up about 400 pounds of books, and then we mailed them to Manitoba. I wonder when we will see Jayne next? It was hard to see her pull out of Toronto on the Greyhound, for the long ride to Winnipeg, just hours before I boarded a plane back to Basel. It is always hard to part, when you don't have a ticket, or at least a plan, in hand for the next visit. Hope we get to live nearer each other again sometime!

Bee Pops

Years ago, Raisin Bran was on sale for $1 a box, and the kids and I loaded up on 25 boxes. We always liked Raisin Bran, which you can't get here. In fact, Germany has awful cereals - this is Jackie's fav, called Bee Pops. Then there are about 5 different kind of cornflakes, all of which are pretty well exactly the same. I was here in March of '78 and climbed to the top. Nowadays that's pretty expensive. The first time Jackie saw the tower she refused to walk on the "falling" side of it - thought it would come down on top of her for sure!

Bernice and I are here with Tim and Jackie, and it's been beautiful weather - even dipped our toes in the green waters of the Mediterranean. We've rented a lovely apartment in an ancient stone house in the country, and from there we drive each day to places like Siena, Florence, Volterra, and San Gimignano. Beautiful towns in a place that reminds me of the Holy Land. Maybe because the renaissance painters from this area painted so many Holy Land scenes, and always set them in this kind of landscape?

San Gimignano is a town which was a stop on the pilgrim route from northern Europe to Rome. It became quite rich as a result, and to this day has about 20 tall stone towers built by competing families to show off their wealth! You can see the town from many miles away, as it sits on the top of a hill, and then the towers rise from there.

Italy is the most interesting of all the European nations, and though I've been here often, it still seems like a dream too good to be real.

Our Bentley

No - this isn't our Bentley ... but it WOULD be nice! Each March we drive down to Geneva with friends for the Auto Show! Canada may have its Chevy's, and Fords, and such, but here we see the Maybachs, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris of the world, along with the VW's and Škodas and Volvos, of course.

This Bentley would be one of my choices if I could have three or four cars - maybe with its powerful engine it would make a good camping car - you know, for pulling the trailer! The boys have had a great day at the show today - and it is always fun to drive along the Autobahn later with all the other auto-show'rs. Of course, our car is always the beater of the day - we usually have a contest to see if anyone can find a car worth less than ours. Once Chris saw one, he thought. But hey, what can we expect - this is Switzerland!

Herrischried

Jackie and Bernice and I went skiing today in this little Black Forest resort town. Here we are taking a break during the lunch hour. Jackie is a pretty good skier - certainly fearless! - and we love the freedom of racing down a hill, to meet at the bottom and ride up on the chair again.

Bernice and I have skied ever since we were married, mostly at Bozeman Montana and Kimberley BC. She's got great form, though not the daring spirit I tend to be. Here in Europe the skiing isn't as exciting, even in the Alps, because the snow line is too high. All the runs are above the tree line, so there are no cozy runs carved out of the forests, no forest trails to dipsey-doodle through at high speed! But the towns and villages at the bases of the ski areas are much "quainter" and more interesting, and there are no Golden Arches visible from the runs either!

Witches

Today is Fasching, that is, the day when a period prior to Lent begins. Over the centuries, this came to be known as the last day to really round out your load of sin before you had to think of repenting, and so many occultic traditions developed. Now, of course, it is just a cultural thing, or so they say.

Each Fasching, clubs from the surrounding towns mount a huge parade, with many carved wooden masks and eerie costumes.

In nearby Basel, my friend Ted Dick and I observed the piccolo parade. For that, one sets himself down on a square prior to 4 AM, just in time to see all the city lights switched off. Then columns of piccolo players - thousands in total - emerge from all the darkened side streets, carrying lanterns and playing the same melody over and over again. Quite a cool experience, though I'm not sure what the historical significance is.

Europe has always been a spiritually dark place, though it was through the centuries of darkness that the truth of Scripture was preserved by monks and monastic orders. One wonders what the spiritual future of Europe might be.

Good-Bye

The hardest thing about living overseas ,is saying good-bye to people you love, most of all, now, our own daughter. Jayne has been here for three weeks, and it has been wonderful. But all good things do come to an end, and today we've taken the time for a long hike through the valleys around Kandern. It was a beautiful day, and a good time to talk about life with Jayne and try to know how she's doing. We're very proud of how she's handling a difficult time of transition (for the third time in 4 years), and know that God will use these times to train her and shape her for life ahead.

The walk from Kandern to Sitzenkirch, where Bernice teaches, is one of our favorites, and here you see the trail as it leads back to Kandern along the sunny side of the valley. I'm sure we've walked this trail 50 times in the last 3 years. It is about 3 kilometers from Kandern to Sitzenkirch.

Bravuogn

Bravougn, or Bergun as it is called in German, is a little village in eastern Switzerland, and each of the last three years we've come here with 140 friends for skiing and sledding and fun. This train goes up to Preda, a village way above Bergun, from where you take these sleds and run back down to town - about 5 km! It is lit up all evening and so you can go from 9 AM until 11 PM, taking this train up every hour and sledding back down. The train corkscrews upwards through several spiral tunnels. Last night Jackie and I took the last train up the mountain - 11 PM, then waited for the entire train load of sledders to leave, allowing us to run down in solitude. We stopped at a particularly dark point on the run down, and marvelled at Orion and other such starry fellows, looming up over the silhouettes of Alpine peaks around us. It reminded us of the greatness of God, and how He displays Himself through the works of His hands!

I was first here for Christmas '77 - hard to believe. I'd never have thought that someday I'd be coming back here with my kids! These are Tim and Chris. Jayne is here with us too, as is Jackie. It is an alarming thing to have your body do things you didn't command it to do! In the past 98 days then, I've had many tests done, looking for something that was causing these things to happen. Nothing was found, which leaves only one logical explanation: it is Lou Gehrig's.

Lou Gehrig's disease hits mostly thinner people, people who are physically active, and people who are over 40. While only about 2 of every 100,000 get it in any given year, about one out of 700 eventually does get it in his or her lifetime. So if you know about 700 people, like most people do, then one of them will get it. It looks like it is me - I guess you can tell the others you know that they don't need to worry about this anymore!

So what now? The doctor said today that my case seems to be moving along more quickly than usual. I don't believe him though. I think I'm one of the ones who lives to a ripe old age.

The photo is taken at the base of a 700 year old castle, just a 40 minute hike from home.
